About Phillips University Legacy Foundation

The Phillips University Legacy Foundation is a non-profit organization established through the generous support of the Phillips University Alumni and Friends Association and the Phillips University Board of Trustees. Our heritage of excellence is perpetuated through scholarships, leadership conferences, and the preservation of our beloved university's artifacts. The Phillips University Legacy Foundation provides the opportunity to celebrate the gift of education for generations to come.

The Mission

The mission of the Phillips University Legacy Foundation is to follow the tradition of Phillips University by providing scholarships and opportunities to educate and develop leaders who embody Christian values in their lives, service and work.

A Vision Realized

The vision to perpetuate the Phillips legacy has finally been realized. Phillips University was not just an institution built of bricks and mortar. Phillips University is an ideal that transcends both time and place. It can continue to influence lives by perpetuating the tradition of excellence that made it a distinctive leader in higher education.

The Foundation offers scholarship programs for undergraduates, supported by a Foundation scholarship committee who determines all recipients.

The Legacy Foundation Scholarship and Leadership Training Program

The Foundation's flagship Legacy Scholars program offers scholarships and leadership development to outstanding full-time undergraduate students pursuing a liberal arts education at colleges or universities affiliated with the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). Since 2002, the Legacy Foundation has awarded over $1.3 million in scholarships and provided leadership training to 154 outstanding young Christian leaders.

Our History

Unwavering loyalty and dedication was the driving force in the creation of the Phillips University Alumni and Friends Association in 1998. This strong network chartered the Phillips University Legacy Foundation.

In late 2000, the Phillips University Legacy Foundation received an IRS letter exempting it from federal income tax as a 501(c)(3) organization through an advance ruling period ending in 2004.

In 2001, the Phillips University Board of Trustees voted to transfer $3 million of its remaining assets to the Legacy Foundation for use in funding scholarships. Effective 2004, the IRS recognized the Legacy Foundation's status as a 501(c)(3) organization and recognized the Legacy Foundation as a 509(a)(3) supporting organization to the Phillips University Alumni and Friends Association.
